ADDITION OF 3 STORIES TO AN EXISTING SINGLE-STORY BUILDING IN GAZI, ATHENS
Project's Description

The existing structure was constructed during the 1960s'. According to the laboratory results, its structural framing system is made of low quality C12/15 reinforced concrete. The main structural parts are tapered 35/65-85cm columns and 12m long 35/95cm beams, with a haunch at the beam-column joint. Until recently the edifice was used as a car-shop; it is 6.5m high, except at a small part, where there is a mezzanine. According to the architectural design, 3 new floors are to be added.

It was decided to opt for a steel structural system for the new levels, mainly to avoid overburden to the existing foundation system. The new columns are generally HEA400, framing with the HEA600 or HEA400 main beams. In addition, diagonal vertical X-bracings are provided in both directions.

In brief, the following interventions were carried out to the existing structure: 2 new in-situ reinforced concrete shear walls, perimetrical walls between the existing columns, continuous strip footings and heavily reinforced tie-ground floor slab, column, beam and slab strengthenings via sprayed conrcete jackets, new cantilever balconies e.t.c.

Structural analysis and design were performed using ETABS (http://www.csiberkeley.com/products_ETABS.html), complemented by ETOOLS ( for the r.c. members)
