Project's Description
The new control tower, situated at the existing airport at Ioannina, has 6 levels. The basement has a 16-side polygonal shape. The next 3 superstructure levels evolve as a truncated 16-sided pyramid, whereas the top part changes to an inverted 16-sided truncated pyramid shape. The structural system exhibits the following characteristics:
- A 60cm thick reinforced concrete circular raft foundation, based on a 50cm compacted soil improvement layer
- 30 or 40cm thick internal and perimetrical basement r.c. walls, stiffening the foundation
- a 16-sided polygon shaped vertical shear wall elevator shaft, in the middle of the tower in plan
- solid 20cm slabs at all floors below and including the shaft top level
- composite steel and r.c. top 2 levels, featuring 16 inclined steel SHS columns framing with radial and circumferential HEA section beams.
