Project's Description

The project has special architectural requirements and is constructed on a 33,500m² plot, belonging to the Foundation, that is situated behind (west) the already functioning cultural establishment "THOLOS", on Pireos str. It is mainly composed of three underground levels that are intended to be used as parking stations, E/M facilities and storerooms; the superstructure consists of the Youth Museum, Arts Center and the Interactive Media Center. The top of the 1st underground level bears an artificial lake on the largest part of its unsheltered area. On its "banks" the overground areas of the three main building units are situated. These buildings have particular names that correspond to their architectural form, such as "Arrow", "Hut", "Boat" and "Cave".

The main fabrication material is reinforced concrete, however the main constructions of the superstructure with the unusual form and span (Arrow, Huts), are made of steel; their floors are concrete, composite timber. The foundation of the whole complex is a sealed, concrete raft foundation under uplift (water tight basin). For the 10 to 14m deep excavation, all the perimetrical faces were retained, using the anchored steel pile or concrete method. The earthworks were under constant inclinometer monitoring.
